What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is the practice of engineering a business, brand or website to be cited as a source inside AI-generated answers on ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. It is the natural evolution of SEO as search itself becomes generative.

How is generative engine optimization (GEO) different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for ranked lists of links. GEO - sometimes called AEO (answer engine optimization) or LLM SEO - optimizes for being cited inside synthesized AI answers. The technical foundation overlaps, but GEO adds entity clarity, extractable answer blocks, structured data, and third-party corroboration as top-weighted signals.

Do AI Overviews hurt my SEO traffic?

For informational queries, yes - AI Overviews intercept 40-60% of clicks. For commercial and transactional queries, the effect is smaller and being cited inside the AI Overview typically increases branded search and direct traffic, even when the raw click count drops.

How long does AI search visibility take to work?

Prompt-level wins on niche queries can appear within a few weeks of shipping the right content and schema. Category-defining citations across the major LLMs typically compound over 3-9 months of consistent publishing, structured data, and trust-signal building.

Can I just wait for AI search to settle down?

No. LLM training data and retrieval indices are updated continuously. The businesses that get cited first become the canonical sources - and dislodging an established citation is much harder than earning it while the category is still forming.
